What have you done to increase your vocabulary?

My vocabulary is mediocre at best. I know they have stuff like word of the day calenders but I'm not really sure if that will help. Every time i hear a word I don't comprehend, I generally look it up and occasionally remember it. However I don't usually recall words I've looked up in my everyday speech. The majority of my friends aren't the most intellectual and with my mediocre vocabulary I still have to dummy down a lot of things so I seldom get much practice but I don't want that to hinder my own personal progression. Do you have any tips? I'm guessing that I will hear a lot of comments like the more you read, The more you will come across new words and look them up. Just curious if somebody had something unique to let me know about, Thanks.
